A prayer for everyday
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Feelings from an outsider
Hi. I'm Ed.. and I'm Brazilian.
Over the last years I've gained lots of work experience and since I moved to Ireland I've been working in a Digital Agency. Yes, I have 2 years of experience with the Irish Market now, as well as previous experience in Latin America. That's pretty cool, ahn?
I've been interviewed few times. Actually, a lot of times. Different company sizes, different approaches, and I did well in all of them. Yes, I did really well.
I did so well that I actually got a job offer. It wasn't 1 interview only, but 4. Four interviews, 2 practical tests, 2 English tests, 1 spanish test and 1 portuguese test. I also got witnesses to talk about me. They liked me.
Everything is sorted now. Well, almost everything. I'm not illegal, I'm not a criminal, I never got in a fight and I do no harm to anyone. But I'm Brazilian, which means that I was born in a non-european country (even though they discovered us and all our antecedents are Europeans). Brazil has never been in a war and people don't complain about us. In fact, they like us. They like our optimism, our energy and our beaches.
But Brazil is not part of Europe. Consequently I'm not European. That means that nothing is sorted. I can't get the job. Not because I'm not good, but because I was born in a different country. As simple as that. It doesn't matter how good you are or how hard it was to get there. That's how they treat you during the recession.
In fact, is there a recession? As I said, I got loads of interviews and was fully capable of getting them. So... where are the capable Europeans? Are they looking for jobs? Maybe they're employed already.
Maybe people will continue to judge people by its nationality. Maybe it's better to get someone else who was born in Europe simply because they were born in Europe.
Have you ever felt like an intruder? Someone who is alone on the road?
That's how I'm feeling now. I'm an outsider, an intruder. I'm probably annoying people and they probably hate me. They probably hate me because I'm not European. What if I had an EU passport? Would they smile to me?
I'm sorry Europeans. I promise I don't want to steal your jobs. I promise I like this country. I promise there are lots of jobs out there. I'm a proof by the number of interviews I've been through.
So I kindly ask you: please let me show you that nationality is not a label. Let me show you that I can help your country to prosper.
